What has plumbing got to do with jazz and improvisation?

Not the improvisation of cobbling any old thing together, but of the aliveness of never knowing what’s coming next, like in music.
A plumber working on a building site, installing and working from a blank canvas never experiences this.
A plumber who goes into people’s homes experiences it every day.
A skilled improviser takes what has gone before and develops it, sometimes taking it places unimagined by the originator.

Most improvisation requires great skill and really knowing the structure of what’s being improvised around.
This is what the plumber who comes into your home does.
Unless what you want is for them to begin afresh, they’ll be taking your existing probably outdated, maybe broken system and adding bits, taking bits away and giving you something completely transformed.

This may mean them thinking their way into the head of the original plumber to discover what they might have done; each plumber after all works slightly differently.

The art is in taking what’s there and making it into something you really love and that works a dream in this day and age; something that is music to your ears.
