Cowboys rounding up innocents

Plumbing training is full of cowboys

A woman in Scotland contacted us. She’d just signed up with a large private training institution to train as a plumber here in England.

I know there’s a difference in the qualifications in England from in Scotland, so I checked.

I found that a plumber who has completed the minimum training (C&G plus NVQ2 or 6189 Diploma) in England is uninsurable in Scotland as the minimum there is NVQ level 3.

So why did the training institution sign her up to train with them?

I don’t believe they didn’t know she wouldn’t be able to use her training in her own country. If they didn’t know this very important fact, why not anyhow?

Not only did the institution not inform her that her training would be useless, they signed her up for two courses rather than just the first and most essential one.

With ethics like this coming from the people providing plumber training, is there any wonder the industry is flooded (sorry) with cowboys?

I’m so glad I meddled. After checking, I emailed her just in time for her to do some research and cancel before she was committed to spending upwards of £6000 with them. As a student you’re by definition not an expert yet. Of course you’re going to expect the people supplying you training to supply you with something fit for purpose.

Sadly this is not the only glaring omission, it’s just the latest I’m personally aware of. Others include a lack of transparently so thick it could be seen as deliberately confusing, requiring further fees to complete, being unable to provide the necessary experience to complete and more.

Of course, not every training institution is just out for your money, but do check the small print.
